WT5.4 – Upgrade of Intelligent Biomedical Signal Analysis Laboratory

This lab is intended to carry on researches on the selected computer applications related with ICT in Medicine domain. The idea for the laboratory upgrade partially drives from the ENGINE Centre staff involvement in TRANSFoRm – Translational Research and Patient Safety in Europe. This experience has allowed to understand how much ICT can improve the level of medicine in EUROPE. Among the other the following main research stream can be distinguished in medicine: biomedical signal acquisition; computer controlled patient stimulation. The first aforementioned stream refers to different approaches of human to computer integration and plethora of popular methods of physiological signals registration aiming at a patient’s state recognition, while the second one tries to recognize and properly interpret the wish of a disabled patient who cannot use their natural senses to interact with a machine or other human. Quite an opposite situation takes place in a patient stimulation where the researches are focused on stimulation of the disordered cerebral cortex parts aiming at training how to control the body reaction and behaviour.
To successfully run the research, the lab shall be equipped with specialized hardware such as motor hand and universal multichannel biomedical signal sensor system. The main purpose of the laboratory equipment upgrade is the development and completion of the laboratory stand for:
- Measurement and analysis of multimodal biosignals (EMG, MMG, EEG, ECG)
- Analysis of algorithms of dexterous artificial hand control via recognition of subject’s intent (needed for control of bioprosthetic hand (“cyborgization” of a patient with limb loss) and/or for the computer aided training the plasticity of sensorimotor cortex in bilateral upper limb congenital human amputations (before the upper extremity transplantation).
